BOCKENHEIM
SPIRITS OF SCHIRN
- for Schirn Paper

What comes before the SCHIRN’s grand reopening and first exhibitions at its interim location in Bockenheim? Perhaps a prelude—staged before the renovations are finished. Beings populate the future exhibition space, assembled in situ from found objects, furniture, and accessories. Beings made out of things brought here from the SCHIRN’s main building on Römerberg and chance finds taken from the construction site. Marc Krause subtly styles and accessorizes the figures, briefly staging them, documenting them, and then dismantling them again.

Now, what comes after
the prelude? And what is a prelude?
1.) A preliminary action, event,
or introduction that precedes and
prepares for something more
important. 2.) In music:
an introductory piece, often
short and improvisatory,
that sets the stage for a
larger work or stands
alone as a character piece.
